Prerequisite: Introduction to Windows or equivalent

This course contains in Lab course work and will take place on campus

This course will instruct students in the correct use and care of various types of measuring tools. The students will practise hands-on using many different types of measuring tools. The students will measure a broad range of real-life parts, and prepare inspection documentation in the process.

The course will expose the students to different types of inspection documents, and the students will use bar codes and scanners to prepare support documents. Students will work in both the Imperial and Metric measuring systems.

Course schedule:
  • WEEK 1: Introduction to Vernier based instruments
  • WEEK 2: Introduction to micrometre-based instruments
  • WEEK 3: Advanced micrometre measurement: high-precision measurements
  • WEEK 4: Theory and use of Gage Blocks
  • WEEK 5: High precision measurement: measuring the effects of temperature and cosine error.
  • WEEK 6: Angular measurement: measuring angles using different types of equipment.
  • WEEK 7: Complex inspection: measuring a complex part using different techniques.
  • WEEK 8: Dial bore gauges: calibration, use, and reading of dial bore gauges.
  • WEEK 9: Surface finish evaluation using electronic and tactile procedures
  • WEEK 10: Measurement and evaluation of tapers and roundness.

Eligibility:

You are eligible to take these courses if you are:
  • a seasonal worker who is not currently working, but retains ties with his/her employer;
  • self-employed;
  • overqualified for the position you currently hold and the course is relevant to your area of study.
You are not eligible to take these courses if you are:
  • employed in the public or para-public sector;
  • a full-time student;
  • unemployed and/or receiving employment insurance or welfare;
  • receiving CSST (worker's compensation) from the SAAQ.

Maximum of two (2) courses per person.
Maximum of three (3) registrations per establishment.
